Was used for microwave drying. Drying temperature was controlled by a proportional integral differential (PID) controller. A green body was heated to 80+3°C at a constant heating rate o f 2 K/min, and kept at this temperature for 30 min. A l l free water and most bound water evaporated rapidly in the microwave furnace. After drying, the green bodies were sintered by a conventional method. The sintering temperature was 1000°C, the heating rate was 10 K/min and the holding time was 2 h. The densities o f green and sintered bodies were measured by the Archimedes method.

The glass transition temperatures of PVB's containing a wide range of each plasticizer were determined using a Rheometrics Solids Analyzer (RSA-II) at a frequency of 1 Hz and a heating rate of 3°C/minute. Increasing plasticizer level is expected to result in a decrease in Tg. By plotting the Tg of each blend as a function of plasticizer level the level at which no further decrease in Tg can be determined. This level is taken to indicate the point at which the polymer can no longer take up any additional plasticizer.
