One of our goals is to review and interpret the published literature on alcohol and speech and summarize what is currently known about how alcohol affects speech. A second goal is to identify what areas need further investigation in future research on alcohol and speech. In addition to reviewing research findings that have appeared in the published literature, which was based on our own exhaustive search of journals and books going back to the beginning of the 20th century, we also report new findings on the analysis of speech from our own research program at Indiana University and several other laboratories currently working on these problems.
The first three were considered to be weakening, the fourth strengthening. The change of voiceless segments to voiced segments was revealed spectrographically for stops by an absence of a white portion prior to the burst in low frequencies and by the lack of a return to zero on the sonority intensity curve. In fricatives, the spectrogram showed a more intense darkening in low frequencies and a very slight lowering of the sonority intensity curve. Both stops and fricatives were affected: no instances of the voiceless stops [p t k] could be isolated in the spectrograms, and among the fricatives, changes from [s] to [z] and from [S] to  were observed.
