They will stuff to a smaller size for packing than their warmer counterparts and still provide adequate insulation. Remember that by sleeping in a tent and on some type of foam pad you'll add ten degrees to any bag's comfort rating, so the lighter bags serve quite well. Should the temperature drop to an unexpected low, you can add warmth by wearing some clothing. Synthetics fills Q Are bulky Q Deteriorate more rapidly Q Are made from petroleum Q Are relatively inexpensive Q Are warm even when wet Down fill Q Is warm for its weight Q Compresses well Q Has a long useful life Q Is useless when wet Q Is relatively expensive 28 The subject of the type of fill generates a lot of debate but really concerns only two basic types: synthetics and down.
Synthetic fills have a much shorter lifespan. They are made from precious, polluting petroleum. And they take a great amount of space in your pack. Despite all the claims, I've yet to find a synthetic bag that even comes close to down for compressibility. GOOD Down bags do cost more and are susceptible to wetting. But in twenty-five years of canoe travel I have never soaked my bag. The greater cost is offset by the fact that a down bag, well cared for, may be the last bag you'll ever purchase. I switched to synthetics once.
Aluminum is used in many canoes, but not often in the hull design just described. Generally, aluminum canoes are flat-bottom canoes built for stability and used primarily by those interested in fishing or hunting. It is a good choice for a hull material, being very durable and reasonably light, but so far hasn't been adopted into highperformancedesigns. It also has its drawbacks, which include being very noisy, cold to the touch, and prone to leakage when rivets become loose and having a tendency to grab ahold of any rock it contacts.
