Release the brake, pull open the quick release and loosen the nut opposite. On bikes with axle nuts instead of a quick release, loosen the nuts. On hub gear bikes, you may need to release the gear cable before the wheel can be removed – the exact method varies from hub to hub, so see the instructions for yours, but you will need to hook the chain off the single sprocket. On derailleur gear bikes, hook the chain out of the way and pull the rear mech backward, then lift up the rear of the bike. The wheel should now drop forward and out of the frame – it may need a slight knock to free it.

Clean the wheels with a brush and soapy water. This is a very important job – if grit is allowed to build up on the wheel rims, the brake pads will rapidly wear the rim, which can eventually lead to rim failure. Worn aluminium rims can also allow little slivers of metal to become embedded in the brake pads, wearing down the rim even more quickly. If you don’t have a workstand, turn the bike upside down by tilting it towards you and gently laying it on its side. Then walk to the other side, grasp the two wheel rims, and lift the bike so that it’s resting on the saddle and handlebars.
