Polyester is cheap and easy to work with, but it does not bond well with Kevlar or carbon fiber. When combined with fiberglass, however, polyester is fine for molding larger and heavier boats, although it has a high rate of shrinkage and cannot match epoxy for impact resistance and strength. But when a combination of light weight and high strength is desirable, as in canoes, epoxy wins hands down. Vinylester resins have some similarities to both polyester and epoxy, and vinylester is often used with Kevlar for factory-made canoes.
