Helen Drew Right: Look for a particular spot where the surroundings contain natural framing and potential focal points and then wait. There is no guarantee, but you might just get that character, capture a moment or some other wonderful thing that you had not anticipated happening. This unlikely kiss came about by chance, but was caught by being ready with the camera set and the expectation that this particular area would hold such characters who would no doubt emerge at some point. In this instance London’s Soho, with its infamous mix of café society characters, provided the perfect setting for this odd pair to meet; the shot captures the split second in which a beautiful young Italian model spontaneously gave this old Italian gentleman a kiss.

Experiment with this principle, as different subjects work at different points. A number of digital cameras come with the option to place a grid over the LCD view, which beginners can utilise to gain an even better grasp of basic composition skills. By almost filling the entire frame with the frozen sea, the eye is drawn to the natural fissure running through this photograph, which was taken in the Arctic.
