The Institute of Texan Cultures The Institute of Texan Cultures, located in a huge white building at 801 South Bowie Street is an absolute MUST for any student or would-be student of Texas history. Children from first grade up will find something of interest here. Well-trained docents accustomed to answering children's questions are on hand to explain their assigned sections.
It was first opened as a small saloon by Alfred Friedrich in 1881. The exhibit features over 3,500 specimens of mounted horned game, wild fowl, and fish arranged in beautiful, lifelike settings. There is also a wax museum depicting scenes from early Texas history, as well as the small white stuccoed house where famous short story writer William Sidney Porter, better known as "O. Henry," lived and worked. Children especially enjoy seeing the "funny" little typewriter used by the writer. As part of the museum experience, since it is at the brewery, either beer or root beer is served to all comers.
