After an unsuccessful attempt to gain direct acquaintance with the philosophies professed by the sages of Persia and India, Plotinus settled in Rome, where he opened a school in 246. The 54 treatises that form the Enneads were written from 254–70. He died in 270. Bibliography Main texts Plotinus’ writings were edited by Porphyry, who divided them into six sets of nine tractates (hence the name Enneads) according to subject matter, and gave them the titles under which we know them.
