The buck was an impressive 8-pointer that scored in the 140s when it was 3½ years old. We named him the Wishbone Buck in 1990 because the end of his beams looked like a turkey’s wishbone. We never would have gotten him if we didn’t know so much about that piece of ground, and how, why and when bucks use setups like that to their advantage. Those kinds of details are usually the difference between hunting and just hoping. STEP 2: KNOW THE DEER As the Doug Hick hunt illustrates, it’s also important to know what deer are doing year-round on your land.

When we found his buck, we realized just how big it was. It definitely wasn’t the 150-class buck we spotted earlier in this location. This buck’s antlers had a different frame and measured in the mid-160s. Talk about a pleasant surprise! I had never seen this buck before, not even in the hundreds of scouting-camera photos Shane and I had accumulated in previous years. I can’t prove it, but I assume this buck was still in his summertime patterns, and that this section of our farm was on the fringe of his summer home range.

This rule requires hunters to register an antlerless deer before shooting at a buck. For instance, in 2002 we took 34 bucks at Bluff Country Outfitters. In 2003 we took 23, but in 2004 we only took 18. Why? In 2004, hunters in this area were subject to the state’s Earn-a-Buck requirement, which mandated that they shoot a doe or fawn before shooting a buck. Our hunters might have gotten only 18 bucks that year, but they responded to the Earn-a-Buck rule by registering an impressive 98 antlerless deer.
