Don’t rush your child onto a pedal bike once she’s mastered a paddle bike. Let her enjoy the mastery, and wait until she asks for pedals. Bigger kids and adults who never learned to ride a bike can learn the same way. Just remove the pedals from a real bike, lower the saddle so they can easily flat-foot the ground, and have them paddle away. Another intermediate step is a scooter. Most of the scooters you see are those tiny wheeled ones made for kids. They’re too hard to handle. Much better are the big-wheel scooters that run on bike tires.

They have to make their clothing “bike-ish” to differentiate themselves from the clothing on the racks at Target and Macy’s, and in doing that, they make it scary to non-bike riders, and too weird for the Unracer. The clothing ruse Riding a bike makes minimal demands on jerseys or shirts or tops, because when you’re riding your bike, your upper body just sits there. In fact, an upper body with statue-like stillness—a “quiet upper body” in the racer’s language—is a hallmark of good form. Even so, go into any bike shop and you’ll see rack after rack of “technical wear” and salespeople eager to explain to you how it makes the difference between pain and joy, sluggishness and speed, comfort and misery.

You get better to a point, but unless you push yourself to the edge of danger or get specific tips, it’s easy to wallow well below your potential. It was fifteen years before I learned about the role of hips in steering, and I’d still be there now if a racing friend named Mike hadn’t told me exactly what to do. In this book I tell you what he told me, and if you don’t do it already, that tip alone will be worth four times what you paid for this book. This part isn’t all about technique, though.
