6 Lessons from Kosovo Conflict in the Balkans The NATO-led operations in the Balkans offered a unique opportunity to capture coalition command and control and C4ISR experiences and lessons for NATO and its member nation’s first-time ever involvement in out-of-area peace operations and limited war. S. forces operating as a member of a multinational coalition force that consisted of NATO alliance members, Partnership for Peace members, and other nations such as the Russians. In regard to the latter, an added challenge for NATO, and the United States in particular, was the fact that the Russians required special and different command arrangements for Bosnia and Kosovo.
