A preheated air blast is introduced near the bottom of the furnace, burning the coke and forming carbon monoxide gas, which, in turn, reduces the iron oxides in the ore, leaving the iron in the metallic state. Molten iron dissolves considerable amounts of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur; as a result, the pig iron contains these impurities in such quantities that it is extremely hard and brittle, making it unsuitable for applications where ductility is important.
