But the Persian Gulf region was troubled. Pirates constantly sacked ships, and in Bahrain there was constant feuding among the Al-Khalifa family members who were heirs to power. The British became convinced that they needed to get involved to help keep order. In 1820 Bahrain and several other countries in the region signed a “General Treaty of Peace,” which was an attempt to stop the ongoing political conflicts and make the seas safe from piracy. This was the first of many treaties signed with Britain, creating an alliance that would exist until Bahrain’s independence in 1971.
For example, the Indian rupee, their monetary unit, was also the major Bahraini currency, particularly in coastal communities. ” Some good—at least as judged by local standards—came from the isolation.
